Viburnum, also known as snowballs, is one of the most popular ornamental plants in Germany due to its shape and the numerous species. Many owners are eagerly awaiting the flowering, which can last for several months and always brings joy to your own green oasis. However, not everyone knows when the musk herb plant (bot. When does viburnum bloom?

The flowering time of the snowball species differs greatly from one another. The reason for this is the original distribution areas. Of the ten typical species grown here, only the common and the woolly viburnum are native to Central Europe. However, all taxa can be divided into two broad flowering periods:

  • Early spring - late summer
  • Late autumn - winter

However, these give little information about the actual duration of the individual taxa. However, snowballs are one of the genera that can flower for several months with good care. Ordinary snowball

The common one is the classic among snowballs and can be found in its wild form everywhere in Germany. The fruits are berries that birds like to eat from the end of November, making the species popular as a bird protection hedge.

Woolly snowball

Viburnum lantana is the only other species of snowball that can be found wild in Central Europe. The flowering of the species shows from April to June in umbrella panicles and does not smell really pleasant. For this reason, the plant is not so popular in the garden.

Japanese snowball

With this type you have to pay attention to the individual variety, because not all of them flower for the same length of time. 'Summer Snowflake' shows the flowers of May to September, while 'Mariesii' only from May to June blooms. In any case, the Japanese variety starts flowering from May.

The evergreen cushion viburnum is a species that blooms very quickly compared to the others. Despite the evergreen foliage, the flowers only appear above the June.
