When the summer lilac is in full bloom in June, hobby gardeners get their money's worth. So that the Buddleja thrives and comes into its own, the choice of location is an essential criterion. If a location with optimal lighting conditions has been found, it still does not have to be the perfect place for the butterfly lilac being. This mainly affects the Buddleja, which is to be planted in the garden bed. The soil conditions are just as important as the light requirements of the butterfly bush. The soil, but also the substrate, should meet the following conditions so that the flat-rooted plant grows splendidly and healthily.

- pH value: slightly acidic, ideal - tolerates slightly alkaline soil conditions

Anyone who plants this type of lilac in the garden should make sure from the start when choosing a location that it is in a place where it is protected from cold winds. the shallow roots is only conditionally hardy. The shoots tend to freeze even at low minus temperatures. If necessary, a separate windbreak should be installed on balconies if it is not possible to move the bucket to a warmer, draught-free location.
But in principle wind-protected locations should be preferred. The shoots of the plant are mostly very fine and can easily break off in strong winds.
Not everyone can tolerate the strong scent
If the butterfly bush is cultivated in a bucket, it can usually be switched if the chosen location does not prove to be advantageous. This is more difficult with planted plants. That's why it's absolutely necessary here site selection to take into account that a usually strong scent emanates from the flowers of the summer lilac. This is not always perceived as pleasant. Accordingly, locations should be chosen that are further away from seats so that the scent does not disturb.

The same applies to allergy sufferers, although the pollen and not the scent prevent a pleasant stay in the garden. Allergy sufferers should completely avoid summer lilacs on the balcony.

Anyone who has not just bought a dwarf summer lilac must consider growth when choosing a location. Depending on the variety, a butterfly lilac reach a growth height of over four meters and a width of up to 1.5 meters. The plant neighbors should be correspondingly further away so that the summer lilac can spread unhindered. Locations under trees or similar delimiting conditions are not suitable.

In principle, the butterfly bush is particularly effective in locations where it dominates - i.e. where there are no large trees to distract. Roses are ideal for pre-planting and/or underplanting. Smaller perennials can set further color accents and can be perfectly combined with a Buddleja as a solitary plant.
