Sweet apple varieties are ideal for numerous recipes, such as apple sauce, apple fritters or classic apple pie - and of course they are also a delicious snack straight from the tree. When choosing the varieties for your own garden, however, you should pay attention to more than just the taste. The resistance of the apple trees and the ability of the fruit to be stored, harvest time and ripeness for consumption are also decisive if the cultivation is to be successful and the yield is to be as high as possible.
sweet apples
Tastes are different. This is particularly evident with apples. Some like more sour apples, others love the sweet apples. Therefore, we would like to introduce you to 15 sweet apple varieties in the following article.
sweet apple varieties from A - F
Alcmene
Alkmene is a cross between the varieties Cox Orange and Privy Councilor Dr. Oldenburg, which, unlike Cox Orange, can also thrive well in drier climates and on drier soils. In terms of taste, the sweet apple with the mild acidity is still reminiscent
Cox Orange
The apples can be harvested from around the beginning of September and have a yellow to crimson skin. After harvesting, they can be stored for about two months. A disadvantage, however, is that the plant and the fruits are not resistant to scab.
Beautiful from Boskoop
The apple variety "Schöner von Boskoop" or simply called Boskoop is a well-known and popular representative of the sweet apple varieties. The Boskoop is ready to be picked in October. Immediately after harvesting, however, the fruit still tastes very sour. Only after a storage of about four weeks do they reach the so-called maturity. This means that the taste changes during this time. There is a difference between ripeness for picking and ripeness for consumption in many apple varieties.
In the case of the Boskoop, the sour apples become sweet fruits with a light and fruity acidity. The aroma is rounded and intense.
The variety has high resistance to powdery mildew and scab. When storing, however, care must be taken to ensure that the temperatures do not drop too low. Otherwise the flesh may turn brown and the apples may spoil. Storage at around 10°C is ideal to keep the fruit fresh and crisp.
Brettacher
The Brettacher apple brings a fruity sweetness. The trees belong to the varieties that are well resistant to scab and powdery mildew. They grow medium strong and become medium sized. The fruits can only be harvested towards the end of October, but are not yet ripe for consumption. They only develop their full sugar content from around January and then taste correspondingly sweet.
Apple trees of the Brettacher variety are susceptible to fruit tree canker on moist soil, but are also resistant to scab and powdery mildew. In addition, the fruits can be stored well and for a long time.
Florina
The Florina variety has numerous advantages to offer. Even as a standard tree, it produces high yields very quickly and is resistant to fire blight, mildew, skin smut and scab. Although the apples can only be harvested at the end of October, they can be stored very well.
The taste is juicy and sweet. The peel can be yellow-green to purple-red.
Varieties of G - P
Gerlinde
Gerlinde is one of the best apple varieties for spindle trees or espalier fruit. However, it is not suitable for tall trees. Yields are very high very quickly. Harvest from the end of September. However, the full maturity for consumption only occurs after storage until around January.
Gerlinde is also one of the recommended varieties, as it has good resistance to diseases such as scab and mildew.
gold parmesan
The gold parmane is not very susceptible to powdery mildew and scab, but can suffer from fruit tree canker and be attacked by aphids. The gold parmane brings good yields early on, so that it can be harvested within the first few years. The fruits are not ripe until the end of September. The full maturity for consumption is not reached until October, after four weeks of storage. The sweet, slightly fruity and sour apple can be stored until January.
To keep the tree from becoming obsolete, it should be pruned regularly. Because the Goldparmane is one of the varieties that tends to produce lower yields after just a few years without cutting.
Kaiser Willhelm
Kaiser Wilhelm is one of the apple varieties that are wonderfully suited as table apples. The sweet taste with a slight acidity is reminiscent of berries and is therefore a special feature. The picking maturity is reached from the end of September to October.
However, the full aroma only develops after storage for around four weeks. The apples can be stored until March. However, over time they become brittle. The fruits therefore taste best from November to around February.
pilot
This apple variety has good resistance to mildew and scab and is ideal as an espalier fruit or spindle tree. However, it should not be cultivated as a standard. This makes Pilot particularly suitable for smaller gardens or areas with little space.
A special feature of the fruits is that they can be harvested around mid-October, but only reach maturity much later. Around February, the full taste has developed. However, storage can also take place until May or June without any problems.
Sweet apples with R
Rebella
The Rebella variety is ideal for low-maintenance gardens and regions with harsh winters, because the trees are resistant to fire blight, mildew and scab and are also not very susceptible to spider mites. They also have a pronounced frost hardness.
The sweet fruits can be harvested from around mid-September and then stored for around two months. The ripeness for consumption is already reached at the harvest. The apples can therefore be eaten or processed immediately. This makes Rebella one of the apple varieties that can also be eaten fresh from the tree.
relinda
If the Relinda apple tree is planted in a sunny location, it will produce very sweet fruit. If, on the other hand, they receive too little sunlight, the acidity will predominate in the aroma. The variety is ready for harvest from October. However, you should wait at least a month before eating them, because these apples only become ripe for consumption after a few weeks of storage.
Due to its good storability, the Relinda apple can be kept until May.
retina
Apples of the Retina variety are juicy, sweet and ready to be picked and eaten from August. However, the fruit cannot be stored for long. Therefore, they are ideal as fruit in summer and autumn. Until winter, however, they can only be stored in processed form, for example as cider or apple sauce. The trees are resistant to powdery mildew, scab and spider mites and are generally very easy to care for. This makes them well suited for beginners in garden care.
Rewena
Due to its resistance to fire blight, scab and mildew, this apple variety is comparatively easy to care for. The trees are of low growth but have high yields. This makes them ideal for small gardens.
From October you can harvest the sweet and aromatic fruits. However, the best taste is only developed after about a month of storage. The apples store well and can easily be kept until March.
Red Ice Apple
The Roter Eiserapfel variety is one of the oldest cultivated apple trees and can be stored for a very long time. The picking maturity is reached between September and October. Initially, the fruits are sweet but still quite bland. The full aroma only develops during storage.
The ripeness for consumption sets in around December. However, storage is still possible until the following summer.
Apple varieties from T - Z
topaz
Topaz is mainly grown as a standard and has a broad but squat crown. The tree has good resistance to powdery mildew. The fruits are ready to harvest from October. However, you should wait before eating this variety, because the apples only reach their full maturity after at least four weeks of storage. They taste juicy and sweet, spicy and intense.
Due to the good storability, the apples of this variety can easily be stored until March. However, with increasing storage time, the peel becomes "greasy" because oily substances are released from the apple over time. This is not critical, but it can change the taste.
Zuccalmaglio's Renette
This representative of the sweet apple varieties can be grown as a standard or trellis fruit and produces good yields in the first few years. The fruits are relatively small, but have a very intense and aromatic taste with a slight acidity. The Zuccalmaglios Renette is not harvested until October, and as late as possible.
The apples are well suited for storage over the winter and do not reach maturity until November at the earliest.
