For some, dandelion is an annoying weed, for others a remedy. The indestructible plant even grows between concrete slabs and on walls and stretches its yellow head towards the sun. Dandelion tea and dandelion juice are part of the assortment in every health food store, dandelion salad is a tasty side dish in selected restaurants. Even dandelion coffee is praised by naturopaths for its health-promoting effects. Is it possible that dandelions are poisonous?

The common dandelion (Taraxacum officinale), like the aster, sunflower, marigold and daisy, belongs to the daisy family (Asteraceae). The herbaceous plant contains white milky sap in all parts of the plant. The fleshy taproot, which can be up to a meter long, is striking and a nuisance for all hobby gardeners. The dandelion flowers are bright yellow. With the formation of seeds, the well-known dandelion flowers, which are loved by children, develop.

Taraxacum officinale is rich in vital substances, minerals and vitamins. It contains more vitamins A, C and E, magnesium, iron, potassium and calcium than lettuce. It is also rich in proteins and valuable beta carotene.

The common dandelion can easily be confused with other Taraxacum varieties. The plants of this genus are very similar. Sometimes differences can only be seen in the shape of the seeds.

Are dandelion poisonous?

It is easy for small children to put a dandelion flower or a leaf in their mouth. Concerned parents then wonder if there is a danger. It is true that the yellow flowering plant contains oxalic acid and taraxacin in addition to many healthy ingredients. The toxic oxalic acid is mainly contained in the dandelion leaves. Taraxacin also works slightly toxic. It is mainly found in the white milky sap.
Taraxicin can cause the following symptoms when eating the plant parts:

  • diarrhea
  • nausea
  • liver pain
  • stomach pain
  • cardiac arrhythmias
  • malaise

If you notice these symptoms, drink plenty of water.
It is possible that skin contact with the white milky juice increases with particularly sensitive people and small children

  • skin irritation
  • itching
  • redness

leads. However, these reactions are very rare. If you notice the symptoms mentioned and suspect that the cause is skin contact with plant parts, wait a moment. The skin irritation usually disappears very quickly. If this is not the case, consult a doctor.

tip: The milky sap of the dandelion is considered an effective home remedy for fighting warts. Moisten warts with the white liquid daily.

Dangers for animals?

When horses are allowed to graze again in spring, the vital substance-rich dandelion plants are waiting for them. These are irreplaceable for horses. They stimulate digestion and metabolism. However, the Taraxacum plants on heavily fertilized, nitrogenous meadows often contain only a few healthy bitter substances.
Dogs like to nibble on dandelion flowers and leaves. Rabbits, guinea pigs and hamsters feed on the plant. There is no danger for these animals when eating dandelion. On the contrary, they benefit from the diuretic, detoxifying effect and the high content of vitamins and minerals.

Special case cat!

Unlike most other pets, cats are very sensitive to dandelions. Because dandelions are for them poisonous. However, it is hardly possible to protect free-roaming cats from contact with the plant. Rest assured that your outdoor cats are smart enough to withstand the dangers of the garden. Plant parts are more dangerous for house cats, which long for the green stems. Never give your house cat parts of the plant to eat and make sure that it always has enough cat grass available.
