Basil is often cultivated in pots so that fresh leaves can be harvested all year round. Unfortunately, the plant usually dies very quickly. A possible reason for this is an incorrectly selected location. We reveal here what is important for successful cultivation.
light
Basil, scientifically named Ocimum, requires one bright location. In summer it should have at least six hours of sunshine. Proximity to the window and a position that faces south as far as possible are therefore crucial for successful cultivation in the pot.
heat and draft
The herbal plant should get a warm but not heat-accumulating location and not be exposed to cold drafts. Draft window sills are therefore just as unsuitable as the south wall, which strongly reflects heat.
A well-ventilated but warm location is important. Basil plants should not be too close to other plants or heat-reflecting walls. You can test whether there is a draft on the window sill, for example by holding a light cloth, a burning candle or a damp hand directly in front of the window. If the cloth moves, the flame flickers or your hand gets cold, it pulls at this point.
plant proximity
Basil does not "get along" with all plants. Even if it is cultivated in a pot in the apartment, you should pay attention to the plant neighbors in the immediate vicinity. Among other things, the following are unsuitable:
- savory
- dill
- chervil
- marjoram
- thyme
Rosemary, cucumbers and tomatoes, on the other hand, make good planting neighbors for the basil and can also be placed right next to it on a rather small balcony or in a smaller space. Due to the different care requirements, you should not put the plants in the same plant pot or tub.
