Planting callas is not an art. Nevertheless, you should know the growth and resting phases of tropical plants, because these have an influence on the time of planting. We clarify: this is the best planting time for Callas.

Note flowering time

There are a total of eight species that belong to the genus Zantedeschia. They are characterized by different flowering times, which can extend from late winter to spring, or reach their peak in summer. After the calla has bloomed, it retreats to its underground rhizome. Since the species are native to tropical regions, they do not follow the seasonal sequence. The change between rainy and dry season is crucial for growth and resting phases. This aspect has a significant influence on the planting time.

Fall planting for indoor callas

If you want calla lilies to beautify your home as a potted plant, choose autumn as the planting time. Put the rhizomes in a pot with fresh soil so that it is at least ten centimeters thick covered with the substrate. Several tubers feel comfortable in one vessel, provided that the distance between them is the thickness of an onion. When planting, you should consider the following aspects:

  • Planting in the pot makes sense when the arum plant has just sprouted
  • It makes sense to plant during the flowering period
  • after flowers have withered, fall planting is not recommended

plant flower bulbs

If you would like to prepare your calla for planting outdoors instead, you should store the tubers in a cool, dry place after the leaves have come in. Wait until the plant has stored its energy reserves in the underground rootstock before digging it out of the ground. The arrow-like leaves with their long stalks wither completely. Now you can clean the rhizomes and overwinter. Your planting calendar starts in the new year:

  • Grow flower bulbs in pots with nutrient-poor soil from January
  • transplant into humus-rich and nutrient-rich soil in March
  • In principle, tubers can be cultivated all year round

Notice: When you put the bulb in the substrate, you need to pay attention to the correct orientation. The rounded side faces down while the tip faces up.

Plant in the flower bed

The popular ornamental plants with their interesting inflorescences, which are surrounded by a mostly white bract, are very sensitive to frost and are therefore mainly cultivated as container plants. In the summer months, the plants can also be planted in the garden. This procedure is primarily recommended for mild regions. In order to find the right time for planting, you should consider these aspects:

  • put outside at the earliest when the first leaves sprout
  • Plant out when there is no longer any danger of frost
  • do not plant in the bed before the end of April
  • the ideal planting time is the end of May

Tip: You can also sink your Zantedeschia together with the planter in the flower bed. This makes it easier to dig up in autumn when you have to transport the exotic plant to winter quarters.
