Building a sandstone wall is relatively easy as long as you keep a few points in mind. We reveal here which tools and other materials apart from sandstone are necessary.

In a nutshell

  • Sandstone is a very durable material
  • Wall needs good foundation and must be grouted
  • real eye-catcher in the garden

sandstone

One speaks of sandstone when a stone has more than 50 percent sand in its composition. Depending on the level of content, the stones can be more or less stable or porous. However, the general lifespan for all species is between 100 and 150 years.
Natural stone also has a number of other advantages. For example:

  • breathable
  • plantable
  • easy to edit
  • moisture retaining
  • available in numerous colors
  • Wall can be built easily
  • inexpensive

Anyone who decides to build a sandstone wall in the garden can also get creative. For example, a wavy upper edge or a planting would be possible.

Materials needed

The materials required to build a sandstone wall are merely the structural materials needed for the foundation and the wall itself. Necessary are:

  • concrete
  • gravel
  • mortar
  • sand
  • sandstones
  • gravel

tool

The list is also very clear in terms of tools. Are needed:

  • rubber mallet
  • trowel
  • measuring tool
  • vibrating plate
  • shovel or spade
  • line
  • rods
  • level

Tip: A vibrating plate can be rented at most hardware stores. The purchase is therefore not absolutely necessary.

lay foundation

In order to build a sandstone wall that will last for a long time, it is necessary to create an appropriate base. A solid foundation is ideal for this.

  • Mark out the foundation: The course of the wall is marked out by inserting a rod into the respective corner points and stretching a cord between them.
  • Dig foundation: After staking out, the excavation can be carried out either with a spade or a mini excavator. If this has the right dimensions, the earth in the pit is compacted. A vibrating plate, for example, which can be rented in most hardware stores, is suitable for this.
  • To fill: One layer each of crushed stone, gravel and sand is filled in. The respective materials are to be entered in equal parts or equal amounts. After each layer, the soil is compacted again with the vibrating plate.
  • Concrete: Once these steps are completed, the mixed concrete can be poured. For this, too, we recommend borrowing a mixer from a hardware store. The concrete is then smoothed with a mason's trowel.
  • Let harden: Before you can build the sandstone wall, the foundation must dry completely. This can sometimes take several days or even more than a week.

Tip: The curing time depends on the current weather. If it rains, they should cover the concrete as a precaution. However, the tarpaulin required for this must not lie directly on it.

Building a sandstone wall: instructions

As with the material and the tools, the steps are clearly arranged in terms of number and degree of difficulty. The construction is still physically demanding. Therefore, several days and assignments should be planned. This is necessary if only because the concrete of the foundation has to harden first.
And this is how it is done:

  • Create first row: If the sandstone is not available as a cuboid, but as natural stones with different shapes, a corresponding order should be determined. This makes it possible to keep joints small. For this it makes sense to first lay out the stones appropriately and as desired and then to number them. Optionally, a number can be written on it with chalk or written pieces of painter's tape are glued to it.
  • Apply mortar: The mortar is used as a binding agent on both the top and bottom of the bricks. You must press the individual elements firmly. If there is an uneven line after checking with the spirit level, it can be evened out with a rubber mallet.
  • Seal joints: When all the bricks are aligned, you can fill the joints with mortar.
  • build wall: Proceed in the same way for each additional row. You have to place the sandstone offset to the bottom row.

Tip: Carrying out the work with a helper makes sense in any case. Not only because the wall can then be erected more quickly. The strain on your own body is then also less.

frequently asked Questions

Can I also paint a sandstone wall in the garden?

Yes, that's entirely possible. However, a breathable color must be chosen. Emulsion paints and varnishes are not suitable.

Do I have to observe legal regulations?

This applies to every wall. Regional differences between the rules and laws are possible. In any case, the respective municipality should be asked in advance what needs to be considered. In garden clubs, the management should be consulted.

How can sandstone walls be cleaned?

In the case of moss growth, manual removal makes sense. The use of Kärcher or sandblasting equipment could damage the stones.
