Although in principle every tree has the right to exist, it may be necessary to remove it in individual cases. Instead of the saw, you can let it die off with tree-killing agents.

In a nutshell

  • not all trees can be killed just like that
  • Ringing is one of the most effective and at the same time most environmentally friendly methods of all
  • many tree killers also damage other plants and even animals

General remark

Basically, we advise against removing a tree on your own responsibility, let alone poisoning it. In many federal states and municipalities, this is even forbidden by law. However, if a tree needs to be removed, e.g. because it is diseased or poses a hazard at its location, contact a specialist to find out if and how the tree needs to be removed. With any use of substances, care must always be taken to ensure that the environment is not damaged.

This guide is for information only and does not constitute a guide!

creepers and other parasites

Many trees are dying because the sap is literally cut off from them by climbing plants and other parasites. If you have a lot of time and are looking for a particularly "natural" method of killing a tree, you should therefore specifically settle these plants on or on it.

Plant climbing plants, e.g. ivy on the tree

How does it work?

Climbing plants deprive the tree of light and air and impede its growth. Mistletoe, for example, attacks the supply lines and damages the host from within. As a result, the load on the tree increases up to the point of overload - dying begins.

How long does it take?

  • approx. 12 to 24 months

particularities

  • no real guarantee of success
  • well suited to kill already damaged trees
  • completely environmentally friendly variant

The ringing

One of the simplest and at the same time most effective methods is the so-called curling. In addition, it does not contain any substances that could unintentionally damage other plants or even animals.

How does it work?

The cambium under the bark carries water and nutrients from the roots to the shoots and leaves. If it is removed, there will be no supply and the tree will gradually die.

How long does it take?

  • approx. 12 to 36 months

particularities

  • done properly very safe and reliable
  • very slow method
  • completely free of chemicals

Epsom salt

Magnesium sulfate, also known as Epsom salt in everyday language, is used for a variety of purposes, from laxatives to plant fertilizers. In excess, however, it can also be used effectively as a tree killer.

In larger quantities, Epsom salt, known as a slow-release fertilizer, can also act as a tree killer.

How does it work?

Magnesium sulphate develops a strong osmotic reaction in the wood, especially in the root area, as a result of which the cells dehydrate and die. The nutrient balance of the tree comes to a standstill.

How long does it take?

  • a few weeks up to half a year

particularities

  • Frequently multiple refills of salt are required, since complete tightness of the sealed holes can hardly be achieved
  • Magnesium sulphate in high doses is dangerous for small mammals or plants in the immediate vicinity
  • Easily and easily available in the drugstore

Notice: Even small cracks can allow saline to escape. If you do not notice any visible success, refill the salt and water again after a few weeks.

copper sulfate

Again and again one reads about the effectiveness of copper as a tree killer. This is indeed the case, but only works if the salt is used in high doses. Proceed in the same way as already described for magnesium sulphate. Effect and duration of action are generally comparable, with copper sulphate having an even more harmful effect on the surrounding flora and fauna.

Other toxins

In addition, there are numerous other harmful substances that can be used as tree killers, all of which are used in the same way as Epsom salt and copper sulfate. The substances are transported directly into the tree via boreholes, where they can then have a targeted and effective effect. For example, the following are well suited:

  • glyphosate
  • Other broad spectrum herbicides
  • Acids (Caution: Only handle with protective equipment!), e.g. hydrochloric acid, battery acid, etc.

Attention: Many substances that are very effective as tree killers are considered environmental toxins! If at all, they should therefore only be used to a limited extent and sparingly!

copper nails and blue water nails

Again and again one reads that simple copper nails are sufficient to reliably kill a tree. However, reality shows that nails alone are not enough to destroy trees. They also emit copper ions and damage the wood in the area of the impact. However, the amount is never sufficient for an effect beyond the impact channel.

Instead, the trade offers so-called blue water nails. These are also copper nails, but they are stored in a supplementary solution of copper oxide and used together with this in boreholes. The main effect here is likely to come from the copper oxide that has already been treated, so that the additional nail is likely to be dispensable.

frequently asked Questions

Are there any legal problems if I want to kill trees?

Yes. Many regions or municipalities have so-called tree protection statutes. They regulate which or from what size trees may only be removed with permission. However, the contents of the statutes vary significantly.

What are the penalties for illegally killing trees?

Depending on the tree protection statute, fines can be in the mid five-digit range. In addition, violations of the Nature Conservation Act very quickly become criminal offenses.

Where can I get information on the respective tree protection statutes?

Questions about the removal of trees are usually answered by the local regulatory office or the nature conservation office in the responsible district office.

Why should I let trees die "softly"?

If you cut down a healthy tree, you will also hit numerous inhabitants of this habitat. If, on the other hand, it dies slowly, the animals also gradually leave the plant and are no longer disturbed by the subsequent felling. In addition, felling is not always allowed, so "killing" in advance brings some benefits in terms of permissibility.
