During the Christmas season, light a candle every Sunday until Christmas and comfortably increase the anticipation of the festival - this makes the Advent wreath the focus of a popular custom. In addition to the large number of unusual wreaths, the classic Advent wreath is made with the help of a blank bound. This usually consists of straw, polystyrene, branches or foam. If you want to tie an Advent wreath yourself, you often use the purchased blank version. But that need not be. Because we will show you 2 methods with which you can easily make a blank wreath yourself and use it to design your own personal Advent wreath or door wreath.

Make the wreath blank yourself: instructions

Materials needed

  • flexible branches
  • newsprint
  • floral wire
  • painter's tape/tape

Method 1: blank from branches

A blank is easily made from thin twigs. Thin, flexible branches are suitable for this, such as:

  • forsythia
  • pasture
  • dogwood
  • ranunculus
  • hazel
  • maple

For the branch blank, take a few thin twigs and bend them into a round shape. You vary the size of the circle depending on the desired size of the wreath. However, you should note that the finished wreath will increase in volume. Wind the branches around each other and fix them with the wire. Add knots in this manner until you are satisfied with the size and thickness of the blank.

tip: The branches should be cut just before use, otherwise they are easy to break.

Method 2: Newspaper blank

A newspaper blank is a very simple, cheap and quick method for a blank wreath. To do this, lay several layers of old newspaper on top of each other and roll them into a tight roll. Now make a second one newspaper roll and connect them to form a circle. For the round shape, you can use a cake ring, for example.

Then fix the newspaper wreath with masking tape or adhesive tape. masking tape is particularly suitable in this case, since the branches later slip less when binding than on smooth adhesive tape.

Tying an Advent wreath with a blank: instructions

Materials needed

  • various coniferous greens (e.g. fir, pine, thuja, ilex)
  • secateurs
  • gloves
  • Green Floral Wire
  • Candles (alternatively: LED candles) and candle plates
  • Decoration as desired (e.g. cones, berries, orange slices, pieces of wood)

notice: Caution should always be exercised when using conventional candles. You should never blow out the candles, especially in connection with an Advent wreath. Sparks can fly and twigs and decorations can catch fire. Use a candle snuffer instead. Candles should never be left burning unattended!

Tying an Advent wreath: step by step

Step 1: sticks bouquets

Once you have decided on a blank, you can start making the wreath. The procedure is the same for both blanks.

Sift through your fir greens and shorten the branches to about 5-10 cm in length. Then add the individual branches to small ones bouquets together. The wreath becomes particularly beautiful when you tie different types of brushwood together. You will now tie more bouquets in this way. Depending on how big your blank is or how bushy you want your wreath to be, tie more or fewer, thicker or thinner bouquets. Of course you can tie bouquets at any time.

Step 2: Untie bouquets

Take the floral wire and wrap it around your blank a few times. Start with the first bouquet and tie it clockwise to the blank with the wire. The wire is not cut and stays in one piece throughout the tying process.

The next bouquet will now imbricated placed on top and tied. So the wire will be hidden from the previous bouquet. Tie bouquet after bouquet to the blank until the wreath is full and you are satisfied.

With the last bouquet you cover the wire from the first bouquet. Finally, protruding branches can be trimmed.

tip: Wrap the blank with green masking tape. Small gaps and the green flower wire are not so noticeable.

Step 3: Decoration

Your wreath is now complete and ready for decoration. If you want to decorate the wreath as an Advent wreath, place four candle plate and candles on the wreath. If the wreath is to be used as a hanging door wreath, attach a pretty ribbon for the candles instead of the candles suspension on the wreath.

tip: If it is to be hung up so that it is visible from both sides, the underside must also be equipped with needle green.

Now you can decorate your wreath according to your ideas. Various natural materials are available for this, such as cones, cinnamon sticks, star anise, dried orange and apple slices, small pieces of wood and berries. But Christmas tree balls, bows or stars also look pretty. There are no limits to your imagination. The various decorations can be easily attached with wire or a hot glue gun attach to the wreath.

notice: Some decorations, such as holly berries, can be poisonous. In such cases, you should place the wreath out of the reach of children and pets.
