Lawn trimmers and brush cutters are useful tools in areas that are difficult to maintain with a lawn mower. However, if the grass trimmer jams the line or the spool is empty, the device can no longer perform its duties. However, it is not always necessary to replace the entire coil. It is often sufficient to wind up a new thread and it is also cheaper. We explain how it works.

Grass trimmer thread

If the line on a brushcutter or grass trimmer is jammed, no longer elastic enough, too short or completely missing, the problem can be solved very easily with the right knowledge. For this it is usually not even necessary to replace the entire coil.

preparation and safety

In order to make the measure safe and effective, however, a few points must be observed during the preparation. The required steps are:

1. Remove drive

With electric models, the cable must be pulled, with variants with a battery, the battery should be removed and with petrol-powered variants, the spark plug cable should be removed. This is the only way to ensure safety when checking the problem and changing the grass trimmer line.

2. Find problem

When the drive is safely switched off, the cutting line and spool can be checked. In some cases, the plastic of the thread no longer has enough elasticity and instead of bending, it breaks or binds. This can significantly affect cutting performance. In other cases, the unwinding of the thread is obstructed by foreign objects or it is caught in a groove. The third main problem is a cutting line that is too short or no longer available.

3. Use the user manual

If the cutting line is not simply obstructed in its task by a foreign object, the operating instructions must be consulted. On the one hand to remove the cover of the line spool and on the other hand to find out the line diameter and the required length of the grass trimmer line. If the operating instructions are no longer to hand, they can often be viewed online from the respective manufacturer of the device or can be reordered.

Winding the thread yourself: instructions

If the cutting line on a lawn trimmer or brush cutter has become too short, it can be replaced very easily. Corresponding threads can be found in every hardware store. It is important that the thread diameter and length are selected to match the model. Otherwise, not only would the cutting performance suffer, but jamming could also occur. The following step-by-step instructions show how to wind the appropriate cutting line:

  1. In order to remove the spool from the device, you must first remove the so-called line head. As a rule, it is sufficient to press on the two retaining clips on the side. This releases the lock and the head can be removed.
  2. Take the line spool out of the holder. If there are any thread remnants left, you must remove them. Bend the thread, which has been shortened to the appropriate length, in the middle. Hook it into the guide at this kinked point. This may require some finesse. However, the cutting line must be securely fastened.
  3. Now wind the cutting line clockwise around the guide. You have to make sure that both ends of the thread run parallel to each other. They must not cross or twist.
  4. When the winding is complete, insert the ends of the thread into the appropriate slots and pull the thread tight. It should be tight so that the cutting performance can be as usual again. The protruding sections should have a length of 10 to 20 centimeters.
  5. The line spool is put back into the brushcutter or grass trimmer and the line head is closed.

Extra tip: Before winding the thread, you should put it in water for a day. This makes it more supple and elastic, making it easier to wind up. Soaking also helps if you haven't used the grass trimmer for a long time and the cutting line no longer has the necessary elasticity.
