operation area
A scarifier is used to remove moss, lichen and weeds from the lawn. This can improve grass growth as nutrients and water can penetrate the soil more easily. In addition, the floor is aerated. This makes it possible to cultivate a healthy meadow even in places that are difficult for growth. In connection with the following care measures, even a previously stained lawn can still be saved:
- adjusted fertilization
- frequent blasting
- regular mowing
functionality
Scarifiers consist of a roller equipped with blades. This is rolled over the lawn so that the blades can penetrate the soil. They separate roots and tear out unwanted growth. This results in several advantages. These include:

- Soil is loosened
- Fertilization becomes more efficient
- Water can penetrate the soil more easily and evenly
- Roots are stimulated to new growth
Notice: Scarifying should be done as a preventive measure, especially on lawns that are partially shaded and therefore tend to spread moss. An annual use is often sufficient to generate the benefits mentioned.
Electric or manual?
Renting or renting a scarifier means having to choose between manual and electric versions. Both have advantages and disadvantages.
Manual scarifiers
The merits of the manual variants are as follows:
- easy handling
- low fees for borrowing or renting
- ideal for small areas
- no pollution of the environment through energy consumption
- no additional electricity costs
- very quiet, therefore feasible at any time
- agile
However, the effort required to use it is extremely large. Depending on the size of the area and your own physical strength, the care measure can take a long time and be exhausting. It therefore makes sense if scarifying is done in stages.
Tip: Manual versions of the scarifier are also very cheap to buy, so that it may not be necessary to borrow them. Because even if the device is only rarely used, the costs for the purchase are lower than the rental fees in the medium and long term.
Electric variants
While electric versions are more expensive in terms of rental fees, they also mean less hassle. The advantages are therefore:

- suitable for larger areas
- little effort
- ideal for heavily moss-covered lawns
- faster progress
This makes it possible to scarify even a very large meadow. In addition to the higher costs for renting, however, there are other potential disadvantages with the electric models. These are:
- where applicable, limitations due to cable length or battery life
- louder noise during use
- additional costs for electricity consumption
Electric models are optionally tied to close proximity to an electrical outlet, which requires a special degree of caution in use. Or the use is limited by the battery life and the respective duration for charging the battery. Despite the comparatively low effort, mandatory breaks may be necessary.
Tip: Electrical devices tied to cords are often the best option. An extension cord or cord reel can provide a large radius.
requirements and choices
When deciding to hire a scarifier, you should primarily consider the following criteria:
- size of the area
- physical strength
- Tilt and bumps on the lawn
