More and more people are turning to turf when designing their garden. No wonder, since after just a few weeks you have a closed, playable lawn. But how thick is turf actually? We answer your questions about turf dimensions.
In a nutshell
- Lawn thickness dependent on peeling machine
- standardized thickness about 2 cm
- important for quantity and quality determination
turf
Turf is a natural product. It is cultivated in special schools, so-called lawn schools. After about 12 to 14 months, the turf of the rolled turf is sufficiently dense and high so that the turf can be harvested with a narrow layer of soil using a sod peeler. Rolled turf is not only beautifully green, but also evenly thick. The finished webs are then rolled up and placed on the market.

Notice: Once the turf is harvested it must be fully laid within 36 hours or it will turn yellow and begin to rot.
How thick is turf?
Turf is available in different sizes. Within an order, however, each sod contains the same size. The standard dimensions for 1m² rolled turf typically correspond to the following values:
- Length: 250cm
- Width: 40cm
- Thickness/ Height: about 2 cm
- Weight: 15 to 20 kg
The thickness of the rolled turf usually consists of a layer of earth and the grass growing over it. Like the other dimensions, it usually depends on the setting of the peeling machine. In addition to the standard dimensions, other dimensions are also available for the consumer. Larger dimensions are particularly suitable for large commercial areas. However, these sods should then be laid by machine.
Importance of the thickness of the turf
But why is it so important to know the height of the turf? Thickness is a quality feature. Thicker rolled turf can access more soil and therefore more nutrients during transport and therefore dries out less quickly. However, if you plant lower-quality turf correctly, the quality differences are no longer visible after just 2 weeks. Also, the thickness is important
- for calculating the required amount of turf
- when preparing the topsoil in the garden (only 13 to 18 cm required instead of the conventional 15 to 20 cm)

Notice: So that the rolled turf is flush with the mowing edge, you have to add the thickness of the rolled turf to the previous excavation. Since turf already contains soil, you need less of your own soil to reach the desired height.
frequently asked Questions
What is a sod?A sod is a cut out, mostly square piece of turf.
How much does a standardized rolled turf sod cost?Depending on the quality and type of grass, the material costs are between two and eight euros per square meter. In addition, however, there are usually additional costs for delivery, fertilizer or laying. As a result, a square meter of rolled turf can cost up to 18 euros.
Do the different types of grass also have different thicknesses? The thickness depends on the setting of the respective peeling machine and therefore varies from company to company. However, there is usually no significant difference in thickness between the classic varieties of play turf, shaded turf and premium turf. However, special types of grass differ in thickness.
When can I step onto the turf?Careful entry is possible immediately, but not advisable. If the strain is too high, the growing process could be disrupted. Therefore, avoid entering it for the first two weeks. The lawn is fully playable after 6 to 8 weeks.
