With a wooden strawberry pyramid you can cultivate many specimens in one place. This variant is particularly recommended for small gardens. The project is explained to you in this guide.

In a nutshell

  • Strawberry pyramids offer space for many strawberry plants
  • are built upwards
  • use weather-resistant and robust wood
  • Build a basic structure in the form of a pyramid
  • Distance between pyramid steps 25 cm

materials

Before you can build your wooden strawberry pyramid, you need the right materials. The variant of the strawberry pyramid presented in this article has a height of 150 centimeters on a base area of one square meter. That is, the dimensions of the pyramid are 100 x 100 x 150 centimeters, which in terms of size lends itself to a variety of gardens. The individual levels of the pyramid are 25 cm apart, giving you six levels for the strawberries at the end. The following materials are required for this:

  • 4 x wooden boards measuring 10 x 2 x 150 cm
  • 4 x wooden boards measuring 10 x 2 x 100 cm
  • 1 x squared timber measuring 10 x 10 x 40 cm
  • 100 to 120 x 30mm long stainless steel self tapping screws (M5.5 or M6).
  • 8 self-tapping stainless steel screws (M5.5 or M6) of 100mm length
  • 8 to 16 self-tapping stainless steel screws (M5.5 or M6) with 15 mm length (depending on metal angle hole number)
  • 4 stainless steel brackets measuring 30 x 30 mm or 40 x 40 mm

You will also need more wooden boards for the individual steps. Because the pyramid narrows towards the top, you'll need to cut each plank to size. Also use ten centimeters wide and two centimeters thick for the boards. The need for wood for the individual levels is quite high. For the bottom step you need four boards measuring 10 x 2 x 100 cm. You have to reckon with a material requirement of at least ten or twelve meters for all levels. So stock up on enough wood.

Notice: You can have the boards cut at the hardware store for a fee to get the required length.

Suitable wood

Robust and weatherproof wood is particularly suitable for the implementation of the pyramid. It doesn't matter whether you want to use local or tropical wood. The biggest difference is of course the price. Tropical woods are significantly more expensive because they have to be imported. You can also use old Euro pallets or wooden panels that you have left over. You just need to cut it to the dimensions you need. If you want to buy wood, the following types are recommended:

  • douglas fir
  • larch
  • Black Locust
  • Oak
  • teak
  • azobe
  • Bangkirai

Notice: When choosing the wood, make sure that it is untreated. They do not release any toxic pollutants into the substrate, which in turn could get into your organism via the strawberries.

tool

Of course, in addition to the materials, you must not forget the necessary tools. The following list gives you an overview of the tools you need to build the strawberry pyramid:

  • saw of your choice
  • cordless screwdriver
  • Attachment for cordless screwdriver (choose according to screws)
  • tape measure
  • protractor
  • pencil

Strawberry Pyramid: Build the basic structure

Once you have the materials and tools you need at hand, you can start building the strawberry pyramid. The following guide will help you:

make frame

  • Saw the squared timber into 4 equal parts
  • each section must measure 10 x 10 x 10 cm (cube)
  • serve as corner points of the base frame
  • place the 10 x 2 x 100 cm boards as a square
  • Place cubes in their respective corners
  • Screw the boards to the cubes
  • do not screw the boards together
  • the finished frame should measure 100 x 100 cm
Build the frame of the strawberry pyramid

build pyramid

  • now use the 10 x 2 x 150 cm boards
  • they form the 4 edges up to the top of the pyramid
  • cut both ends of the 4 boards at specific angles
  • lower end: 60°
  • top end: 30°
  • the angles are sawn from both corners of one long side
  • Cut through the entire width of the wood (10 cm) at an angle
  • at the end one long side of the board must measure 150 cm
  • it is the visible outer edge
  • the other is the shorter inside edge
  • fix the 4 boards over the 60° angle to the corner cubes
  • use 2 screws (100 mm) for this
  • Pyramid should now be visible
  • Then fix the pyramid tip using metal brackets
  • use 15 mm screws for this
  • Place metal brackets on the outside of 2 boards
  • screw
  • repeat on each side of the pyramid top
  • Place brackets slightly offset in height
  • Screws should not meet
  • the basic framework is complete

Tip: Determine the angles even more precisely by placing the individual boards for the pyramid corners on the frame and central beam. You can use the protractor to determine exactly what angle you need for a stable pyramid.

Fasten steps: instructions

Now the basic framework is in place. Now it's time to cut and attach the individual steps in which the strawberries will be planted. The stand frame counts as a single step. That means you only have to adjust five levels. The distance between each step is 25 centimeters:

  • Measure the distance between the pyramid sides at step height
  • Cut boards to the required length
  • Cut boards at the ends to the required angle
  • each stage requires a different angle
  • Screw boards between pyramid corners
  • Tilt the boards at a 45° angle and fasten them
  • 16 screws are required for each step
  • this allows you to fix the substrate
  • finally place in the desired place, fill and plant

frequently asked Questions

What is the ideal location for the strawberry pyramid?

Depending on the variety or species chosen, strawberries require full sun to partial shade. Since strawberry pyramids can be planted on each side, there is an open location that is spoiled with sun from morning to evening. Since the sun also shines on the pyramid from the east and west, even the more north-facing specimens get enough sun.

Is it also suitable for terraces or balconies?

Yes. Since there is no direct contact between the substrate and the ground, you can easily place the pyramid on a suitable terrace or large balcony. Furthermore, it is possible to fix the pyramid on a board that is equipped with castors. This allows you to move the pyramid much more easily, for example to place overwintering strawberries more advantageously.

Is there an easier way?

If you have enough space in the garden, you can stack square wooden frames of different sizes like a pyramid. The largest wooden frame is used as a base, filled with substrate and then a few centimeters smaller wooden frame is placed on the ground. Four to six levels are easily possible with this method and can be used immediately.
