They are hardly available in the supermarket, so it is worth planting yellow raspberries in the garden or on the balcony. Even if many of the varieties are available as robust new breeds, there are still old raspberry varieties with a yellow color. The care of the small, tasty fruits is easy and can even be done in a plant pot. You can therefore easily implement our care tips for yellow raspberries.
What varieties of yellow raspberries are available?
One of the oldest yellow raspberry varieties is the "Gelbe Antwerpener". It was first mentioned in 1800, making it one of the oldest raspberries in Europe. Small fruits grow convincingly here, reminiscent of the taste of wild raspberries.

This yellow raspberry is extremely robust and vital. It prefers a slightly shady location with loamy yet well-drained soil. In order to produce a lot of fruit, a good water supply is recommended. It grows as an upright shrub and is therefore ideal as a pot plant on the balcony or other very small locations. With a height of approx. 150 cm, it is also ideal for children to snack on. "Fallgold" develops a lot of sweet fruits with an intense aroma. Since the harvest time does not begin until August, it is counted among the autumn raspberries.

Many garden owners are enthusiastic about "Sugana". You harvest twice a year from this yellow raspberry variety. Too tempting for anyone who likes to nibble on fresh fruit and enjoy the aroma of wild raspberries.

How to plant yellow raspberries
Choose a good location before planting. Above all, it should be sheltered from the wind and partially shaded. Yellow raspberries love light soil, so offer the plant a humus-rich and loose soil to prevent the dreaded root diseases. Good preparation has a positive effect on growth: Before planting, compost is placed in the planting hole.
Meanwhile, the root ball should stand in water for about 15 minutes. Use rainwater or stagnant tap water here, under no circumstances should the plants be scared off with cold tap water. After a good portion of compost has been placed in the planting hole or planter, the raspberry plant is placed in such a way that the root ball sits properly in the soil.

Fall planting is better than spring. The plant has enough time to form roots. This creates an ideal prerequisite for the development of many fruits. If you plant several raspberries, a distance of between 40 and 50 centimeters should be maintained. For an entire row of plants, there is a distance of approx. 1.5 meters from each other.
The plants need this space to develop well. Good ventilation of the foliage and sufficient light should also not be underestimated. Furthermore, with a large-scale planting, you also prevent soil compaction, which is often the cause of root diseases. Attached is a trellis or pull cord on which the long rods can grow. This also makes it much easier to harvest the individual varieties later on. Cutting the yellow raspberry plants is also unnecessary, as they have plenty of room to grow on the string or wire.
The care of the floor
Raspberries only form shallow roots that do not go deep into the ground. Under no circumstances should you chop here, because the roots would be damaged. It is a good idea to mulch the bare soil with grass clippings, straw or compost. This special care counteracts the loss of moisture, while without mulching the water can evaporate quickly. At the same time far fewer weeds form and save you the tedious plucking.

The timing of pruning your yellow raspberries determines the harvest. For this reason, individual varieties are divided into summer and autumn raspberries. This does not detract from the taste of the fruit, both varieties are rich in aromas and vitamins. And with intelligent planting, you can harvest fresh raspberries from June to October. In principle, all yellow varieties are cut after harvest. In any case, this point in time is reached before winter.

When pruning, pay attention to early-bearing and late-bearing raspberry varieties. Early-bearing raspberries only develop their fruit on two-year-old wood. This means annual branches are not pruned so you can harvest fruit next year.
Only rods that have been harvested this year are suitable for cutting. The rods grown this year are preserved. Do not leave more than five rods on the plants in total. In this way you avoid unnecessary growth when cutting. Late-bearing varieties of yellow raspberries will make your job easier. They are simply cut directly on the ground after harvest.
Grow yellow raspberries
In order to enjoy even more of the delicious taste next year, it is a good idea to propagate the plants. On the one hand, this work is already done naturally by the root suckers. However, you can also form sinkers in a targeted manner to get the propagation going. To do this, take one of the rods and stick it firmly into the ground. Over time, new roots form here. As a rule, yellow raspberries multiply by themselves. On the other hand, if you want to prevent individual varieties from spreading too far, you should ensure that the roots cannot spread further.

Raspberries sometimes suffer from red root rot. In this case, none or only very few, weak rods sprout. In the worst case, the whole raspberry plant can die. For this reason, soil compaction should be counteracted from the outset. Just as unfavorable is waterlogging, which can lead to rotting of the roots. If, on the other hand, blue-violet spots form on the tails, it is the tail disease. Do not damage the canes of the raspberry plants and trim them as directed in the care instructions.
Unfortunately, yellow raspberries are also attacked by spider mites or aphids. Soapy water can help here, but care must be taken that the fruit does not come into contact with the liquid. The same applies to the commercially available products.
