When and for how long lavender blooms depends on the variety as well as the climate in which it is grown. It can be assumed that lavender has a longer flowering period in warmer climates, such as the Mediterranean region, than in colder climates. However, with the right care, the flowering can also be prolonged in our latitudes, the lavender plants can be made to flower for the second time. The decorative plants can be found all over the world.

heyday Germany

In the local climate zones, the lavender blooms much later than is the case in the Mediterranean. This is mainly also variety dependent. The widespread French lavender is one of the early flowering and also best-known types of lavender. Because the plant flowers the longest, even in the local latitudes. In Germany, hobby gardeners can therefore enjoy the decorative and pleasantly scented herbs as follows in the following period:

  • most lavender varieties only from mid-June
  • some even as late as July
  • Early summer still too cool here
  • also dependent on the weather
  • the more sun the better

If you plant several lavender varieties, early and late, in a flower bed at the same time, you can also extend the lavender flowering period. But by autumn at the latest, when the days are getting cooler and shorter, even the last herbaceous plants will wither at the end of September.

Cut back for longer duration

If the lavender plants are cut back in summer, they often bloom a second time in late summer. If the flowers have faded at the end of July or beginning of August, you should act immediately to extend the period of the fragrant flowers. When cutting, proceed as follows:

  • cut all withered inflorescences
  • cut by about a third
  • remove before seeds are formed
  • Leave branches with leaves

With a bit of luck, decorative flowers will form a second time in August to September. If, on the other hand, the lavender plants are to be harvested and processed further, the inflorescences are already cut while the flowers are still open. In such a case, there is usually a second bloom.

Different sorts

An extended flowering period in the local latitudes can be easily achieved if several different varieties of the graceful lavender are planted in the garden bed. the French lavender is thus the first to form its flowers. In warm climates this can be as early as May, by June it has bloomed in all climates. The real lavender begins to show its lush flowers at the beginning of June, especially in the mountainous regions. The following lavender plants should also be mentioned:

  • Spike lavender in mid-June
  • Lavandula end of June
  • all varieties until about the end of August

Depending on the variety and the right cut in summer, the sea of flowers of the graceful Lavandula can also be extended into September.

Flowering in Italy and France

If you would like to experience the lavender blossom in Provence or in Italy, you should book the May or June choose. Because it is precisely in these two months that the wide fields in France and Tuscany shine in a blue sea as far as the eye can see. Since the fields here are planted for further use, the lavender flowers are usually cut when they have just blossomed. However, a Lavandula that grows wild or is cultivated in a garden as an ornamental plant also has a longer flowering period in a warm climate than in the local latitudes. The following duration can be assumed:

  • the lavender blossom season starts earlier
  • the first flowers appear in May
  • blooms until the end of August

Two different heydays can be assumed here. Firstly, that of the wild or non-commercial lavender in the gardens, which blooms between May and August. On the other hand, the lavender used for commercial purposes on the extensive cultivation fields in Tuscany and Provence. Due to the early harvest, this bloom can usually be admired between May and June.

Flowering time in Spain

Mallorca, the Balearic island belonging to Spain, also has the right climate to grow lavender. So the viewer is also offered between May and June the purple fields with the decorative flowers and the breathtaking fragrance. Here, too, the lavender plants are cultivated for commercial purposes, as in France and Tuscany. The exact time and length of the flowering lavender plants in the Balearic Islands also depends on the use:

  • the first flowers appear in May
  • in the fields until mid-June
  • then it's harvest time
  • in private gardens until August
  • depending on pruning also until September

Since the same climate prevails in the main cultivation area of Mallorca as in the other Mediterranean countries, the lavender plants also bloom here from May until well into late summer and early autumn.

Lavender blooms in Africa and Asia

There are also lavender plants in Africa and Asia. But the French lavender, which is well-known here in the local latitudes and in the cultivation fields on the Mediterranean, does not occur there, because other varieties predominate here. In Africa and Asian countries, the following variety can be found in particular:

  • Green Tooth Lavender
  • blooms between June and August
  • not as a breeding plant in these countries
  • grow wild

In Asia, lavender plants are not widespread, there are only a few wild specimens here. In North Africa, on the other hand, which is close to the European Mediterranean region, many varieties that are native to Europe can also be found. Because especially in the times of the Orient, the lavender plants were also used commercially here. The plants were also shipped due to the lively trade connections between the Mediterranean countries and North Africa. The flowering time is similar to that of the Lavandula from the Mediterranean areas, as there is a similar climate.
