Blowflies are very fond of laying their eggs in carcasses or in rotten food. If they suddenly appear in the apartment, this is therefore not a good sign. It is then wise to find the cause that attracted them as quickly as possible. In addition, there are a number of effective ways to get rid of them. A special trap that you can easily build yourself is very effective.

Blowflies in the apartment

We usually have no problem with most flies. However, the blowfly inevitably triggers disgust and defense mechanisms in many people. Among other things, this may have something to do with the fact that many species are exceptionally large and have an unusual metallic sheen. Above all, however, the disgust is probably caused by the fact that we know that these flies prefer to lay their eggs in carcasses and food that is no longer entirely fresh. They are primarily attracted by the intense smell that emanates from carcasses and certain foods. They perceive this smell outside the house and then penetrate the rooms. For the bluebottles, this is a clear indication that they have found an ideal place here to lay their eggs. The animals' larvae then feed on the decomposing or spoiled residue.

notice: During their metabolism, the larvae of the blowfly release certain products that can impair human health. If, for example, meat has been attacked by the flies, it is no longer suitable for human consumption.

prevention

It's best, of course, if you don't have any bluebottles in the apartment at all. However, it is likely that this cannot be prevented 100 percent all the time. However, the risk of an infestation can be significantly reduced. It is important to deal with food, food leftovers and, above all, food waste. These should never stand freely in the room, but always be covered. Better yet, place them under a glass or china jar, or wrap them in plastic wrap. Meat and fish should always be stored in the refrigerator and only taken out of it for a very short time. The organic waste bin must also have a well-fitting lid. With all measures it is important to consider that a bluebottle is attracted by the smell. The spread of the odor must therefore be prevented.

notice: A particular problem is decomposing animals such as dead mice brought into the home by a cat. The cat must therefore be checked before entering the house to ensure that it does not have an uninvited gift with it.

flytrap

But if it does happen and bluebottles have gotten into the home, you should do everything you can to get rid of them as quickly as possible. Fly traps have proven to be very effective. They are perfect for massively reducing an infestation in a relatively short period of time. However, they only work if the cause is tackled at the same time. The trap uses the fact that blowflies are almost magically attracted to certain smells. It is very easy to build yourself. You need the following for this:

  • one or more glasses
  • plastic wrap
  • Apple Cider Vinegar
  • detergent
  • a sharp knife or other pointed object

First you need to clean the glasses well. It is particularly important to free the outside of all adhesions. In particular, there should be no jam leftovers or anything similar. After cleaning, proceed as follows:

  • Pour apple cider vinegar about a quarter full into a glass
  • add a few drops of dish soap
  • Cover the top with plastic wrap (cling wrap).
  • Pull the film taut and attach it to the edge of the glass with a rubber band
  • Use a knife to cut 1.5 cm long slits in the foil
  • Distribute glasses in the room or in the apartment

The smell of the apple cider vinegar pouring out of the jar attracts the flies. They suspect overripe or rotten fruit behind it, which they can feast on. They climb into the glass through the slits in the foil and serve themselves. In most cases, however, they can no longer find their way out. The flies are trapped in the jar. The likelihood is very high that sooner or later they will drown in the vinegar and washing-up liquid mixture. After a while, they can simply be dumped down the toilet and flushed away. It is important that you replace the traps regularly - until no more bluebottles can be seen.
