American cone bugs

The American pine bug is called Leptoglossus occidentalis in botany and originally comes from North America. This type of bug is relatively large, very distinctive and can be recognized quickly by certain characteristics. It was only brought to this country about ten years ago. However, it has already spread widely and lives in native conifers, especially pine trees. Although the American cone bug is also harmless, it attracts other conspecifics with its scents. Therefore, in autumn there can be accumulations in large groups, which prepare for the winter.

leather bugs

Leather bugs are called Coreus marginatus in botany and are reminiscent of leather due to the structure of their body and their color. Colloquially, this species of bug is also referred to as a large edge bug or hem bug due to the wide wing edges. When sucking the plants, the insects inject a poisonous saliva into the targeted area. Especially very young plant shoots can die from this, which is why the leather bugs are perceived in large numbers as pests.

frequently asked Questions

Do the same species of bugs appear every year?

Depending on the prevailing weather conditions and the respective region, other species of bugs can get lost flying into the living quarters every year. There are also some invasive species from distant countries that can appear unexpectedly and settle down.

Why do the bug species secrete a stinky secretion?

Although certain types of bugs can become very annoying in autumn, they are not classified as pests. The stink bugs owe their bad obituary to their habit of spraying a foul-smelling secretion when threatened. In this way, the insects successfully drive away dangerous predators and spoil their appetite.

What should be considered when dealing with stink bugs?

Due to the smelly secretion, the insects should never be touched or crushed with bare hands. The caustic smell of body waste is very difficult to remove, it lingers on surfaces for a long time, especially on wallpaper or carpeting.

How to get rid of the flying stink bugs?

It is best to pick up the stray insects with gloves or sweep them up with a dustpan and hand brush. Then release the specimens outside, but not near the windows or doors.

What measures help to prevent bugs?

When the various types of bugs are out, the windows and doors must be kept closed. Check house walls for any cracks and crevices, seal carefully if necessary. Installing insect screens has proven effective in preventing annoying animals from entering the living space.
