We love summer and fear wasps. But our dilemma is that warm temperatures and these menacingly whirring insects go hand in hand. So that we can fully enjoy being outdoors without being stung, we have to keep the wasps at a distance. A helpful home remedy should be in every coffee can: coffee powder. The effect of coffee against wasps is controversial, but anyone can easily check that for themselves.
Coffee against wasps
The wasps don't need to be given an extra cup of coffee. In order to drive these annoying insects out of our radius, the dry coffee powder is sufficient as a basis.
It doesn't have to be the noblest and most expensive type of coffee. It doesn't even have to be fresh ground coffee. You can dry coffee grounds that have already been brewed, which you would otherwise probably use as plant fertilizer or throw away, and keep them ready for this purpose.

Coffee powder smells fine and wasps have a good sense of smell. However, this is not enough to drive them away effectively. The Kaffeer only unfolds the effect it is said to have against wasps when it is lit.
Ground coffee does not ignite like wood, but smolders and develops heavy clouds of smoke. For us humans, the smoke smells spicy like coffee, so it doesn't bother us in the container that's a little off the beaten track.
It is not clear whether the coffee scent, intensified by the burning, or other ingredients in the smoke drive the wasps away. But it should work, many users claim. Experts, on the other hand, suspect that this method cannot work. If the question remains why they haven't already tested it, then they no longer have to guess. Be your own expert and give it a try. This home remedy is all natural, readily available and costs only pennies per use.
Wasps are not inherently aggressive animals that sting indiscriminately. They only attack when they fill up threatened. Most of the time they are therefore allowed to coexist peacefully with us. The coffee powder can only be used specifically against them if the situation requires it. For example, when they besiege our outdoor coffee table.
Light the ground coffee
- Put one to two tablespoons of ground coffee in a fireproof container. Ceramic and porcelain bowls can shatter, but a sheet of metal is ideal. Ashtrays and old, fireproof cooking pots can also be used for this experiment. On the other hand, unsightly residues can stick to new cooking pots over time.
- Find a spot a few meters away. It should be a fireproof surface.
- Light the ground coffee with a match and let it smolder.
tip: When setting up the container, also pay attention to the wind or wind direction, so that the smoke does not blow over to your coffee table.
duration of effect
The coffee powder works as long as it glows. This will be the case for about 1-2 hours. If you want to drive away the annoying insects for longer, you would have to add more coffee powder and, if necessary, light it up again. Do not blindly rely on the effectiveness of coffee against wasps. Be alert and avoid rushing or attempting to kill if you see a wasp near you. This can make the insect aggressive and attract more specimens.
tip: If you are dealing with an entire wasp nest, you may want to enlist the help of a pest control company. The fire brigade is not responsible for this and you are not allowed to fight or resettle the legally protected wasps on your own.
comply with precautionary measures
Even small, burning amounts of coffee powder should not be underestimated. Place the bin out of the reach of children and pets. They can easily knock it over or touch it out of curiosity or unintentionally.

If you have to move the hot container, be sure to use kitchen gloves, otherwise there is a risk of burns!
alternatives
If coffee against wasps does not bring you the resounding success, you do not have to resort to chemicals immediately. After all, this does not leave you and our environment untouched. Try some other home remedies until you find the ideal wasp repellent for you. This could be for example:
- an essential oil such as spearmint, tea tree oil, lavender, or eucalyptus
- Basil plant as a table decoration
- a lemon studded with cloves
- sliced garlic cloves
