A peach tree in the garden impresses with its blossom in spring and the delicious peaches in summer. The trouble is all the greater when the peach tree is attacked by the curling disease. The harvest fails and in the worst case the whole peach tree has to be cleared. Unfortunately, none of the more than 3,000 peach varieties is completely resistant to the disease. However, there are peach varieties that are quite resistant to the fungus.

frizz disease

Curl disease, also known as blister and curl disease, is widespread. The cause of the disease is the fungus Taphrina deformans. From June to February, the sac fungus feeds exclusively on dead plant material. As soon as the bud scales open slightly, there is a risk of infection in damp weather, as the fungal spores are washed between the young leaves by the rain. When parts of the leaf are affected by the fungus, they become thick, curl, and develop light green and/or red blisters. As the disease progresses, the leaves become white-greenish. They appear enlarged, brittle, and rubbery, and are eventually shed. The tree is weakened by the severe loss of leaves, which leads to reduced bud formation.

So far, there is no real remedy for the fungus when the leaves are already beginning to curl. Likewise, there are no varieties that are completely resistant. Therefore, the tree must be treated preventively. The ideal time to do this is when the buds start to swell. The exact timing of bud swell depends on the region and weather conditions. This can happen as early as January in mild, sheltered regions. Even a cold snap afterwards does not kill the fungus. It can happen that the peach tree has to be treated three times before the buds open completely. If the infection was overlooked, affected leaves and shoot tips must be removed immediately in order to at least contain the spread of the fungus.

tip: To make it easier for you to see when the buds start to swell, it is recommended that you spray individual shoots with a waterproof color spray as early as December. When the buds begin to swell, the paint flakes off, and you can start treatment.
